Peace on Earth – It Starts with You!

Now that we’re in the midst of the Holiday Season, I can’t help but notice cards, banners, and advertisements all proclaiming a hopeful blessing of Peace on Earth. I stopped to think about what that means. One definition of Peace is “freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility.” I have to be honest – most of what I notice in the world appears busy and rushed rather than quiet and tranquil.  Every time I open my email, there are dozens of new messages. When I go onto social media, thousands of connections have posted stories, pictures, opinions and lots of lively activity. As I drove to a recent meeting, horns sounded while all of us crawled through city traffic. There wasn’t anything quiet and tranquil about that experience.

As I looked further for some metaphysical meaning on the concept of Peace, I realized that everything “out there” is simply a reflection of what is going on inside each of us. And, if I want to experience more Peace in my life, I have to choose to allow Peace to be present within me first and then share it with others.  Mother Theresa said “Peace begins with a smile.” I like that.

To experience more Peace on Earth, I invite you to join me in creating and sharing Peace in the following ways:

  1. Give peace through your smile.

Take time to look into the eyes of people that you pass and smile. When able, also say hello or nod to acknowledge that you see them. Successful professional model and businesswoman Christie Brinkley said “Share your smile with the world. It's a symbol of friendship and peace.” As you share your peace with others, it will generate more peace within you. The simple act of smiling calms you down, lightens your load, and enables you to notice more evidence of a peaceful world around you.

  1. Give peace through your help and assistance.

Notice people around you. If you see that someone has full arms, open the door or help them carry their load. If someone is trying to get in front of you in traffic, gently allow them to do so with ease. If someone is short on change to pay for their coffee, buy it for them. As you give out peace and love, you will receive more of the same in return. Actor Christopher Reeve said “Success is finding satisfaction in giving a little more than you take.” I would add that true Peace is a result of sharing Peace and helping others.

  1. Take a peace-break daily.

Take time each day to be quiet and go within. Breathe deeply and focus on your breath. If a thought pops into your head, gently let it go and return to focusing on your breathing. Create that “freedom from disturbance; quiet and tranquility” within yourself for even 1 – 2 minutes in the middle of the day. That “peace-break” will give you more energy and joy as it multiplies Peace within you. According to successful actor and businessman, Chuck Norris, “Exercise, prayer, and meditation are examples of calming rituals. They have been shown to induce a happier mood and provide a positive pathway through life's daily frustrations.” That sounds like a gift – a calm positive pathway through life’s daily activities.

Become the example of Peace that you’d like to see in the world. As you do so, you will begin to see Peace multiply around you. Peace on Earth is possible and begins with you.
