What is Your Purpose?

What is Your Purpose?
By: May McCarthy

I had a chance recently to be with a group of travelers overseas for a week.  It was very clear to me that many of these travelers were quite comfortable with themselves and confident about living their purpose in life.  Everything that they did had this underlying current of joy and meaning and they appeared to me to have a lot more fun on the trip. There are a number of famous people and organizations who clearly define their purpose and have something to advise the rest of us about identifying our purpose.  Some of my favorite examples include:

  • Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can't help them, at least don't hurt them.  - Dalai Lama
  • We must know that we have been created for greater things, not just to be a number in the world, not just to go for diplomas and degrees, this work and that work. We have been created in order to love and to be loved.”― Mother Teresa

  • The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation believes that every life has equal value. It works to help everyone lead a healthy and productive life. – Bill and Melinda Gates

  • I wanted to be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be. I never imagined it would be on TV. – Oprah Winfrey

  • Great businesses are places where problems are solved and lives are improved. – Richard Branson

  • I am here for a purpose and that purpose is to grow into a mountain, not to shrink to a grain of sand. Henceforth will I apply ALL my efforts to become the highest mountain of all and I will strain my potential until it cries for mercy. - Og Mandino

Purpose is defined as the reason why something is done or used; the aim or intention of something;  the feeling of being determined to do or achieve something; the aim or goal of a person; what a person is trying to do, become, etc.

Knowing your purpose answers the questions; why are you here and what are you to do with your life? Going through a process to identify the purpose for yourself and for your business can reap countless rewards. You will begin to focus more of your attention on doing what you’re good at and allow others to do the same.  You’ll realize greater success in achieving goals since you are more focused. You’ll enjoy yourself more since you’ll be using your remarkable talents and skills in fulfilling and satisfying ways more often.  Living life with purpose is a joyful way to live.

To begin to identify your purpose, do the following exercise on a blank piece of paper:

  1. Write down a few things that you’ve done repeatedly since you were a child which has given you great joy. e.g. My friend Steve loved to take apart broken electronics and put them back together.  He loved to help fix things around the house for his parents and receive praise in return.
  2. Describe a few things that others told you that you were good at doing. e.g. My friend Susan is an exceptional encourager and champion for others to achieve their goals.  Susan is a great revealer of truth as she asks questions that help others to find the courage, solutions, and answers within themselves.
  3. List a few skills and talents that you feel successful in using. e.g. I am a great communicator and make complicated issues easy to understand.  I empower people to take simple and effective steps along the path to all that they desire in life.

Now look over your lists and see if there are characteristics that show up on all three lists. Your purpose may lie in these common areas. Start to write down powerful words that describe these characteristics more fully and see if something rises to the surface in the process that feels right. Steve discovered that “I help make other’s lives easier and less complicated.” He now owns a successful plumbing company that helps a lot of customers. Susan realized that she is “A cheerleader that empowers and supports others to find truth, life, and abundance.” She is a brilliant and loving minister who empowers everyone she meets and owns several successful businesses. And for me, I learned that “I help others elevate their prosperity and freedom in simple and easy ways."

Life is much more fun when you live your purpose! I hope that you enjoy the process of discovering your purpose and incorporating more of it into your life daily. May you be blessed on Your Path to all that is Good!
